Another valley scarce

1st June 15                morning                    mid section

cloudy shower,  9-10°c,  1012mb,  SSW 10mph

Another quiet day in poor weather threatening rain. Not much singing and no sign of the Wetland mallards, either brood, on the Wetlands or the canal. On the other hand we had a whitethroat seen and heard singing in the Blackthorn of Hanging Grds at last, but the star today was a spotted flycatcher near to the old farm crossing on the Barleyfield, the first this year ( I thought we had missed out this spring ) . Spotted flycatcher is another species that use to breed with us here in the valley until the early 1990s since then the British population has plummeted so we now only see 2-3 on passage each year and most of these in the autumn.
